Sheffield Removals Health and Safety Policy

Sheffield Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and relocation activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all moves, including domestic removals, office relocations, packing services and storage handling.

We recognise our responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and industry best practice. We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health through effective planning, training, supervision and continuous improvement.

Policy Objectives

Our key health and safety objectives are to:

Identify, assess and control risks associated with removal work, lifting and carrying, vehicle operations, loading and unloading, packing and storage. Provide safe systems of work for all activities carried out by Sheffield Removals personnel. Ensure all staff are trained, competent and supervised to perform their duties safely. Maintain safe and well-maintained vehicles, equipment and tools. Promote a positive health and safety culture where everyone takes responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. Comply with all applicable health and safety laws and regulations and strive for continuous improvement in our standards.

Management Responsibilities

Senior management at Sheffield Removals has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. Management will:

Set clear health and safety standards and communicate them to all employees. Ensure that adequate resources are allocated to manage health and safety effectively. Review risk assessments and safe working procedures regularly, particularly when new services, equipment or locations are introduced. Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions. Monitor health and safety performance through inspections, audits and staff feedback.

Employee Responsibilities

Every employee of Sheffield Removals has a duty to care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees are expected to:

Follow all health and safety procedures, instructions and training provided. Use vehicles, equipment, tools and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately. Take reasonable care when lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling items, and always use safe manual handling techniques. Report accidents, incidents, near misses and hazards promptly to a supervisor or manager. Cooperate with management in the implementation of this policy and attend any required health and safety training.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Sheffield Removals will carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments for all significant hazards associated with our operations. These include, but are not limited to:

Manual handling of furniture, appliances and boxes. Working in confined spaces, stairways, high-rise buildings and tight access points. Use of trolleys, ramps, lifting straps and other handling aids. Vehicle movements, parking and loading in residential streets and commercial areas. Weather-related risks such as rain, ice and high temperatures. Access to properties, including trip hazards, poor lighting and uneven surfaces.

From these risk assessments, we will develop and implement safe systems of work, including detailed procedures for packing, loading, securing loads, driving, unloading and handling items at the destination.

Manual Handling and Lifting

Manual handling is a core part of removal work and is a key focus of our safety controls. Sheffield Removals will:

Provide manual handling training to all operational staff, including techniques for team lifting and use of equipment. Plan work to minimise unnecessary lifting, carrying distances and awkward movements. Use mechanical aids and handling equipment wherever reasonably practicable. Assess the weight, size and shape of items before lifting and refuse unsafe lifts.

Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety

Our vehicles are essential to our service and must be operated safely at all times. Sheffield Removals will:

Ensure vehicles are regularly inspected, serviced and maintained in a roadworthy condition. Require drivers to hold the appropriate valid driving licence and be trained in safe driving practices. Plan routes and schedules so that drivers are not put under excessive time pressure. Secure loads correctly to prevent movement and reduce the risk of injury or damage. Promote safe reversing practices, including the use of guide persons where possible.

Use of Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment

Sheffield Removals will supply suitable equipment and personal protective equipment for tasks where it is required. This may include gloves, safety footwear, high-visibility clothing and other items as identified by risk assessment. Staff must use the provided equipment correctly and store it safely when not in use.

Customer Premises and Public Safety

We recognise that our work often takes place in occupied homes, offices and shared spaces. To protect customers, visitors and the public we will:

Plan access routes through properties to minimise risk and disruption. Keep work areas as clear and tidy as reasonably practicable during moves. Use warning signs or verbal warnings where there are temporary hazards such as trailing straps or open vehicle ramps. Take special care around children, older persons and pets at customer premises.

Training, Communication and Consultation

Sheffield Removals will provide induction training for new starters and ongoing refresher training where required. Health and safety information will be communicated through briefings, toolbox talks and written procedures. We encourage employees to raise health and safety concerns and suggestions for improvement without fear of reprisal.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, injuries, incidents and near misses must be reported as soon as possible. Sheffield Removals will investigate all reported events and take appropriate corrective and preventive action. Emergency procedures, including actions in the event of fire, injury or vehicle collision, are communicated to staff and reviewed regularly.

Review of Policy

This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed periodically, and also following any significant change to our operations or relevant legislation. Any updates will be communicated to all employees and will apply to all work carried out by Sheffield Removals. By working together and following the principles set out in this policy, we aim to provide a consistently safe and professional removal service across our operating area.
